Mixed results for local competitors on Mayo Stages

The Mayo Stages Rally 2010 proved to be extremely tough for all competitors, especially for all the local crews. Out of the 26 local starters only 16 made it back to the McWilliam Park Hotel. A testament to how challenging the event was. First Mayo crew home were Mervyn and Derek Deane from Williamstown in their class 13 Ford Mark 2 Escort. They finished the day in 13th overall and third in class. An excellent result considering the stiff competition. Mervyn also picked up the coveted Eddie O’Hora memorial for the fastest Mayo modified crew home.

Young Shrule moves up the ranks

Fifteen years old Noel Murphy from Shrule Co. Mayo was recently awarded the Keegan Cup. The cup is for drivers aged between 14-16 who take part in the National Autocross Championship. He began 2009 at the wheel of a Honda Civic while his new Nissan Micra was being built. It all took off in March with the first round of the National Autocross Championship in Birr. This was a baptism of fire for the young man as he won his class by a comfortable margin. “Start as you mean to continue”, as they say, and this is what he did, winning the second round at the Cork Autocross and finishing an incredible 15th overall in his 1.4 litre Honda.

Another successful year’s rallying for Mayo and District Motorsport Club

With the motorsport season drawing to a close for another year, Mayo and District Motorsport Club members have once again upheld local honours, winning overall and class awards on some of the major international and national rally championships. On the international scene, Kiltimagh’s John Higgins has been competing on the Tesco 99 Octane British Rally Championship. With one round of the series still to run, John, who co-drives for Cork’s Brian O’Mahony in a Renault Clio Super 1600, holds a comfortable class lead in the rally three category, while the pair are also featuring strongly in the overall championship table.
